MedTurn - a CLS company

CLS Hires Home Depot Executive for Information Technology Senior Vice-President of Logistics

Logistics, e-communication and Collaboration. Those are the words that you will frequently hear Mike Campanaro “Camp” enthusiastically talk about when you are in his presence. Approximately 60 days ago, Camp joined the CLS Information Technology team as Senior Vice President of Logistics. Prior to joining CLS, Camp spent seven years with Home Depot, with his last position as Vice-President of Information Systems.

His logistics experience at Home Depot has given him a comfort level and an understanding of the distribution center environment. Many of his projects were spent evaluating and implementing ways to minimize the number of footsteps and touches to drive efficiencies in the forward supply chain. While reverse logistics is somewhat different, Camp believes there are many opportunities to transfer learnings from forward logistics.

Another area where Camp has a passion is e-communication, both internally and externally. His experience has been in Web-based Data Warehousing tools that became a critical e-communication resource for helping both internal and external clients analyze their business. While at Home Depot, Camp was project lead on implementing several information management technology tools that allowed business units to achieve their sales and financial goals. Camp’s goal is to use this past success and implement enhanced flexible web-based tools for all CLS, CSCS and MedTurn clients to provide them with more business intelligence to improve their reverse logistics program.

Camp also believes in taking e-communication to the next level with trading partners. His Home Depot experience brings with it some positive experiences where sharing the same data between manufacturers and retailers helped to bridge the relationship and help both parties become more profitable. He sees a similar opportunity between the trading partners represented by all the CLS Companies.

As you have an opportunity to meet with Camp, you will find his enthusiasm to be contagious as he talks about opportunities he sees for the reverse logistics industry and ways to better service our clients through streamlined logistics, enhanced e-communication and trading partner collaboration.

Reverse Logistics Trends Conference Highlights
CLS and CSCS representatives recently attended the Reverse Logistics Trends conference in Las Vegas, NV. While this event is focused on Reverse Logistics, it is targeted toward the electronics markets. For that reason, there is a lot of discussion on refurbishment and cost containment.

While the overall needs for this industry varies from the grocery and healthcare markets, there were some interesting trends highlighted that will, if not already, impact our industry. Those trends are highlighted below.

Visibility to the data The industry is requiring real time information that tracks where the return is at all times as well as information on reason for the return. While RFID will provide real time visibility to the data, the industry is not expecting item level RFID for another 6-9 years. It is still too cost prohibitive at 12-20 cents per item. The pharmaceutical industry is leading the progress being made in this area by placing the Item ID on a few select products.
Speed, and more speed The industry wants it faster, quicker and better. This has made it even more important to process the return and quickly get it ready for sale in the secondary market. The longer the product sits before it is sold to salvage, the lower the value. Holding on to the product in hopes of getting a higher price is not the answer. It is much better to move the product quickly at the current market value, rather than wait for an anticipated higher price.
Less touches With the increasingly high transportation costs, it is important to take touches out of the process as a way to control the transportation costs. The fewer times you touch the product, the more value you have.
Returns becoming more strategic The industry is shifting toward an understanding that there is a strategic value to returns. It should not be all about cost control. The data collected provides high value and the way in which returns are handled can also improve customer relationships. A speaker from Cisco made a great quote, “Reverse Logistics is evolving from a necessary evil to a strategic asset that can reduce cost.” It requires understanding the detail for the best results.
Outsourcing More and more companies are looking to outsource their returns management so they can focus on their core competencies. They are looking for companies that are diversified enough to be a single source and handle all steps of reverse logistics- from reconciling, issuing RA, handling disposition, etc.
Federal & State regulations The State and Federal regulations continue to increase. Many of these regulations are around the disposition requirements for handling the product. The key is to make proactive changes to address the new regulations. This means that you also need to include disposition in your product life cycle planning.
